4 Days on Vancouver Island

We headed to Vancouver Island the week before I was starting my new job, so we were a bit constrained with time over there. We ended up being away 4 days all up, including travel. We didn’t have a car at this point so we had to start and end our trip in Victoria, the only city that has evo cars on the island. We took public transport including train, buses, and the ferry to get to Victoria.
On the way to Victoria we stopped off at the Butchart Gardens as had heard good things about them from Poppa. They were quite expensive ($60CAD), but we did spend a good few hours there. They were beautiful, with the most roses I’ve ever seen.

Next we headed to our first camping spot at Sproat Lake, the warmest lake I’ve ever swam in. The spot we camped was called Snow Creek Recreation. Unfortunately we got in at about 8pm, and headed off about 9am the next day so didn’t get too long there. The camp manager came around to our tent that evening and said they had had a cougar in the area recently…

We hiked up to 5040 Peak that day which was beautiful. Great views of surrounding mountains, and a lovely swimming spot (for Lucas). It was quite misty for half of it, but we had patches where it was clear.

We then headed to where we were staying at Surf Junction Campground in between Ucluelet and Tofino. We were staying with Claudia, Bridgets school friend, who showed us around, and got us a campsite for free! It was good to get recommendations from a local. Such a cool area, with a lottttt of young internationals working the shops and restaurants. Apparently all the Aussies migrate to Tofina for the summer after working in the ski towns like Banff, etc.

On our drive back to Victoria we stoped off at Taylor’s Rest Area and swam in the clearest river! Freezing though!

Vancouver Island is stunning and I think we will be keen to visit it for more camping every summer we live here. It would be a beautiful place to live, possibly a slower pace than the hustle and bustle of Vancouver.
